MIT OpenCourse Ware

MIT, have a of their site devoted called MIT OpenCourseWare to as they put it “Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds” by providing free lecture note, exams and tutorials for their courses. All the courses are available from their site without the need to register and can be used either online or off. I have been thinking for a while of doing a few courses before what ever is left of my ability to learn has dried up and since these are way, way cheaper than the open university option I think I will investigate these and let you know how I get on.

Apple Gives UK The Talkies

Finally, after I think is somewhere between 12 - 18 months Apple has announced the release of the iTunes Film Rental for the UK. There is going to be 700 films available from the kickoff (I just love choice) and you can rent a film starting from £2.49 (for older releases) and £3.99 (for new releases). Films can be purchased for £6.99 for older releases and new releases its £10.99.

I think that the purchase price is way too high considering that many DVD’s can be bought for £9.99 (albeit in a single disc format) and to be honest I don’t really buy films unless I really really want one. I suppose Apple guess most people will rent them, I don’t know how that compares to a physical store I rent my films online using Tesco DVD Rental which I find to be an expectional service.

I will be trying this out tonight if its available and let you know what I think

A Small Confession

I have a small confession to make I believe that I have a slight tent fetish.  Every so often Katie and I go camping in our tent of love, its great a bit of a bugger to put up but its great.  Its seen us through the sun of clent, the rain at V festival and also the harsh wind of Scarborough.

However yesterday I went and had a of a re style at the barbers and while I was waiting I quickly glanced through Stuff and it had a look to a website called Outdoor World and it had what looked a really good deal on a tent.  So as soon as I got back in front of the PC I pointed firefox at it.  I started getting that feeling which only meant that in seconds I would be reaching for my wallet and buy buy buy.  I decided to do a very safe thing and open C# and start looking at overloading a class.  After I moved my wallet far from my reach I went back and had a look.

There’s the Vango Beta 250 which I like because its got a porch and also it seems as though you get a small ground sheet as well which is handy as well as lots of vents for keeping you cool.   The other is the Khyam Sherpa 2 which has the same porch but it has these really cool roof things just take a look.  They are both only £50 so if we do decided to go somewhere I’m gonna buy one.  Which reminds if I’m gonna do that its time to put the golf clubs, game cube and also a linksys router on ebay…

One Laptop Per Child

John at work got his hands on a laptop from the the One Laptop Per Child program. I must first the thing is well put together but its tiny I mean really tiny and not meant for people with giant chip hands. As its designed for children in mind to took the obligatory 15mins to work out how to get the thing up and running and of course we couldn’t find any instructions on how everything works. However it once we where up and running I really did like the wi-fi map and browsing and net was no problem. I suppose the laptop all comes into play once a network of them is up and running. It did have some rather cool apps in there though some sort of drum app which was fun to play around it and also a python editor for kids! I suppose get them while they are young.

Sorry about the quality  of the pics I took them with my phone
