Its been a fairly busy month for me. Since the slow demise of my current job to tryanny of the day job (its a slow on going process), I have become interested in being a consult, in the IT field. Ever since I attended the Creative Republic MediaMasterClass event (see if you can spot me in the video) I’ve become really interested in becoming a social media consultant. I really think the possibilities of SM within the public and private sectors are mind blowing. Now I haven’t quite worked out how you actually do this but its something that I’m working on.

First step I thought, should start with following some of the people I met at the event through twitter, I incorrectly assumed that there probably was only a handful of people using twitter in Brum, how wrong I was. Once I started following some people it all began to snowball and I got involved with conversations and more aware of other events that really peeked my interest in the West Midlands. These have included WxWM, LikeMind, Birmingham Social Media Cafe, Amplified 09 and LocalGovCamp.

At each one of these events that I have been to or will be attending, I have met some fascinating people, made new friends and had some excellent discussion. I’ve learnt about Rhubard Radio, had people not laugh at question and comments I’ve made plus eaten some delicious cakes (thanks @podnosh).

I always thought that you had to be in the “main hubs” of activity in the world such as London, New York, San Francisco to get involved with anything like this but its simply not the case. Birmingham is a huge hive of activity there’s stuff going on every single week if you just seek it out (it took me a while to find it but then I can be quite lazy). The people that come to these events are welcoming and friendly and I have had the most excellent introduction to this scene and I know its only going to get better. So to all my new friends out there, thanks for being so nice to an outsider and here’s to a bright future and hopefully a social media consultant type future as well!

People I recommend you follow on twitter:
@podnosh, @paulbradshaw, @bounder, @grunt121, @gabysslave, @katehuges, @cybrum, @chrisunitt and @simonhowes
